She got divorced from her husband earlier this month
An assistant professor of Amity University’s English department was found hanging at her residence in Lucknow’s Gomti Nagar on Sunday. The deceased, identified as Garima Pathak, was a native of Durg district of Chhattisgarh and was living in Lucknow in a rented flat.
It was learnt that Garima got divorced from her husband earlier this month and had been teaching at a private university in Bhopal before moving to Amity University in July last year.
No suicide note was recovered by the police but it is understood that she was frequently visited by one Akhilesh Tewari, who is also an English teacher and had taught at the same private university in Bhopal where Garima was previously employed.
On January 26, as informed by the police, Akhilesh visited Garima and then left for his hometown in Faizabad owing to some work. When he tried contacting Garima on her phone, there was no response.
Akhilesh then arrived at the flat on Sunday morning and despite repeated calls and knocks on the door none answered, thereafter, he managed to open the flat’s door by breaking the handle lock and found Garima hanging from the ceiling fan.
He immediately alerted the police upon seeing Garima’s body and an initial probe has been ordered into the death as call details of the deceased are being scanned with the body been sent for post mortem.
No concrete reason has been found for the professor’s extreme step and the police said more can be revealed about the suicide once they have spoken with Garima’s family and staff members.
