BREAKING Three people ‘have throats slit’ in attack on mosque in South Africa as police hunt attackers

Three Muslim worshippers have apparently fighting for their lives after having their throats slit at a South African mosque which was then set on fire, reports claim.

Police are said to be hunting three suspects, all believed to be Egyptian nationals, after the Imam Hussain Mosque in Ottawa, 15 miles north of Durban, was targeted in a horror attack

Emergency rescuers who were among the first on the scene told local media that two men were “bleeding profusely” after having their throats cut. Another man was said to have been stabbed inside the mosque.

A South African radio station reported that the three injured people had died but this has not been confirmed by authorities.

Horrific video shows victims in pools of blood outside the mosque while a bloodied knife was pictured discarded on the ground.

A spokesman for Netcare 911 told Arrive Alive: “Reports from the scene indicate that three adults had been injured in the attack.

“All three patients had their throats slit with a knife and the Mosque was set alight.

“One adult male is in a critical condition and two other adults are in a serious but stable condition.

Police are now hunting the attackers who are on the run.

A statement from Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) said: “The suspects have fled in a white Hyundai Getz. Rusa is requesting the public to assist in apprehending these suspects.

“Paramedics or doctors who can assist can report to the scene.”

Prem Balrem, from Rusa, told Times Live: “Upon arrival‚ Reaction Unit officers found that two victims had their throats slit and were bleeding profusely – paramedics were called to the scene to attend to the critically injured men.

“Reaction Unit officers then noticed smoke emanating from the mosque and attempted to douse the flames.”

He added witnesses told police that three men attacked the mosque armed with guns and knives, it was reported.

Pictures from the scene show firefighters on the scene with smoke billowing from a door.

A man can also be seen receiving medical treatement.

Paramedic Paul Herbst said reports from people at the scene indicated the suspects “threw some sort of device or petrol bomb” into the mosque before fleeing the scene.

He told Times Live: “As per reports from scene‚ three males entered the mosque shouting‚ screaming‚ and just started stabbing people‚ threw some sort of device or petrol bomb into the mosque and ran away‚”

The attack comes days before the start of Ramadan, a holy month observed by Muslims across the world in the Islamic calendar.
