Congress MP Sushmita Dev writes to Finance Minister Arun Jaitley demanding removal of taxes on sanitary napkins.
Basic sanitation and hygiene care for women of our nation has been a grave issue since ages, there’s no denying it.
As sanitary napkins are allocated under the category of luxury products, the taxing on the product is much more than it should be. Since sanitary napkins are a product of basic necessity and hygiene, a whopping 14.5 per cent tax on the product is not at all affordable for many, especially women belonging to BPL.
Taking this serious issue to the top, Congress MP Sushmita Dev wrote to the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley demanding the removal of unfair taxation imposed on the product.
Dev mentioned in her letter that considering sanitary napkins as a luxury product is deteriorating the standard of life of women in India and such a high taxation on a product of need is discrimination on the basis of gender.
Raising another important point in her letter to Jaitley, she talked about how majority of women in our nation do not use sanitary napkins. Only 12 per cent women out of 355 millionwomen actually use sanitary pads which is quite a shocking number for such a big population.
