A woman was brutally beaten up by her husband Kanpur. The woman has accused her husband and her in-laws of domestic violence and dowry harassment while she has accused the police of negligence and shirking of duty. The woman said that she has been subjected to persistent harassment ever since her marriage in 2016, where her in-laws wanted a some of 5 lakhs to be paid to them. She said that her husband often hit her and his parents supported the act.
This time he beat her with a stick and bashed her nose and lips in. The reason for the beating was that she had called to ask him about his whereabouts when he had disappeared for a night. He did not answer the phone. When he returned home next, she asked him where he had been and at that question , he lost his temper and hit her while his parents watched. Unable to take it anymore, she took her month-old son went to the police and was dismayed to find that she had no help to speak of there either.
She sat in the police station for hours and the police did not pay any attention to her. They did not even get her medical help despite her bloodied face.
On being asked about it by the media, police only stated the obvious that she had been beaten by her husband and that she was being given medical help.
Uttar Pradesh is a state that is notorious for its problem of gender violence that refuses to abate. And iof it was not worrying enough, there is a disturbing sense of the normalisation of violence that women are subjected to.
