On May 06, 2012 Bollywood actor Aamir Khan’s show Satyamev Jayate premiered and in the first episode sat a woman named Parveen Khan. When this woman from Morena district in Madhya Pradesh narrated the story of the savagery of the attack she came under it inspired a nation glued to its TV screens than lending a feeling of commiseration.
It was a Sunday afternoon of March 29, 2009 when Parveen’s estranged husband Hameed walked into her room as she took a nap and the horror that followed next made an indelible impression on her.
It all began when Parveen left her first husband, who was more than twice her age, and fell in love with 21-year-old Hameed when she was 16. But things were never hunky dory between the two when they married and their marriage quickly ran into shambles.
Regular beating and repeated reminders of infidelity towards her first husband by Hameed became part of her life. Now disowned by her parents, Parveen endured the rough patch of her marriage clueless of the horror that awaited her.
Three years into the marriage with Hameed, Parveen got pregnant and gave birth to a baby girl after which her husband expressed a strong desire for a boy. When she fell pregnant for the second time, Hameed dragged her to the hospital by her hair to have the gender of the underborn baby identified.
After understanding that she was pregnant with another baby girl, Hameed forced Parveen to abort and then for the third time again when she was pregnant with another baby girl. Now weakened, shattered and heartbroken by the unrelenting torture, Parveen decided to hid her pregnancy in 2006 from the husband and he accidently learnt she was six months along while one day beating her up with a hockey stick.
Hameed hit Parveen with a full swing on her lower back, she fell on the floor and began to bleed. The baby girl survived and she later gave birth to her. She subsequently demanded a divorce but Hameed refused and she walked out of the marriage with her two daughters.
Eight years after being attacked and mutilated by her husband, Parveen forgave Hameed but is still faced with threats by him. But the courageous woman counts on her two daughters to look after her. Parveen sees her daughters as sons and said they are now studying and will have respectable jobs.
