Sushant Singh Rajput and Kriti Sanon’s Raabta made Rs 10.72 crore in the first two days.
Given that their last releases were box office hits, expectations surrounding Sushant Singh Rajput and Kriti Sanon’s Raabta were high. Adding to the hype were all the rumours of the two actors’ real-life romance. But Raabta, which earned Rs 5.61 crore on its opening day couldn’t beat Sushant and Kriti’s earlier films, MS Dhoni: The Untold Story and Dilwale. It witnessed a dip on Saturday, raking in around Rs 5.11 crore, taking the total collection for the first two days to Rs 10.72 crore.
Raabta had an edge over this week’s other release, Behen Hogi Teri, as it released across 1820 screens, as opposed to the other film’s 757. It was a made on a budget of around Rs 35 crore, director Dinesh Vijan had revealed in an interview.
Raabta is the story of Shiv (Sushant) and Saira’s (Kriti) inexplicable ‘raabta’ (the Urdu word for connection), which dates back to a past life. But there is also a third person involved – liquor baron Zak (Jim Sarbh). The film explores their past-life connection and explores how it affects their present.
The film has received mixed reviews, with critics generally praising the performances of Sushant Singh Rajput, Kriti Sanon and Jim Sarbh, but unanimously criticising the weak story.
Sunday is crucial for Raabta, in order to have a solid opening weekend. But with the India vs South Africa match scheduled the same day, as well as competition from Tom Cruise-starrer The Mummy and Rajkummar Rao and Shruti Haasan-starrer Behen Hogi Teri at the box office, Raabta may not witness much of a jump in its collection.
