US charges two Russian spies over hacking of 500 million Yahoo accounts

United States prosecutors have announced charges against two Russian intelligence officers and two hackers, accusing them of a massive data breach at Yahoo that affected the accounts some half a billion users.

Officials say the FSB – Russia’s Federal Security Service, and a successor to the KGB – targeted the email accounts of Russian and American officials, Russian journalists, employees of financial services and other businesses.

Though the Justice Department has previously charged Russian hackers with cybercrime, this is the first criminal case brought against Russian government officials.

The 2014 hack was considered the largest data breach in history.
